Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Mihlali Mayambela deal stalls over hefty R15 million price tag

Kaizer Chiefs’ pursuit of Bafana Bafana star Mihlali Mayambela has hit a bit of a speed bump after the club was quoted a hefty sum.

Mayambela turns out for Cypriot outfit Aris Limassol and is contracted until the end of next season. The player has been a key figure for his club, helping them to the league title in his first season and second place during 2024/25.

His consistent performances and winning experience in Europe have naturally made him an attractive option for Kaizer Chiefs, especially as they look to accelerate their rebuild under Nasreddine Nabi in his second season.

According to a Soccer Laduma report, Chiefs have put their pursuit of the player on hold after they were told they would need to part with R15 million to get the deal done and bring the 28-year-old back to South Africa.

“Aris Limassol demanded around R15 million with one year left on the player’s contract. This is why the club felt that was too much, hence it’s believed they put it on hold for now,” a source was quoted by the publication.

Chiefs have not completely given up on signing Mayambela and will instead wait until the January transfer window, when he has a few months left on his contract, to either offer him a pre-contract that will see him join for free in 2026 or get a cut-price deal from Aris Limassol, the report further adds.

Cape Town-born Mayambela, the younger brother of former Pirates winger Mark Mayambela, has been playing his football abroad ever since moving to Swedish side Djurgården back in 2016. In that time, he has earned 16 caps for Bafana Bafana.

He began his youth career with the Old Mutual Academy before going on to spend time with both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. After a year at Cape Town All Stars, he moved to Sweden and has been playing in Europe ever since.
