Mkhwanazi vs Mchunu: What will President Cyril Ramaphosa do?

National Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has reversed his March denial and now admits he “knows” Brown Mogotsi, after previously telling Parliament he’d never met him.

His admission comes amid explosive and damning allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who claims senior SAPS figures interfered in high-profile investigations and have ties to criminal networks.

Mchunu insists he will not step aside voluntarily and will abide by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision on his future. Pressure is mounting from the Public Servants Association and opposition parties for decisive action to safeguard the integrity of the SAPS.

With all eyes on President Ramaphosa, we look at how he may respond to a minister who has already provided half-truths about individuals of interest in the saga, including Brown Mogotsi.

Reflections on President Ramaphosa’s likely actions

  • Summon both Mchunu and Mkhwanazi to the Presidency for briefings on the allegations and evidence.
  • Convene a parliamentary debate or special portfolio committee to assess Mkhwanazi’s claims under oath.
  • Commission an independent inquiry or task team to investigate alleged syndicate links and interference.
  • Instruct law enforcement agencies to fast-track investigations and consider suspending implicated officials.

Mchunu also flatly denies any relationship or benefit from arrested businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is now being linked to Gauteng’s criminal underworld.
