Lizzo's transformation: from curves to confidence, no quick fixes here

American singer and rapper Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, has taken to Instagram to address the rampant speculation surrounding her weight loss and to share the realities of her personal transformation journey.

The Grammy-winning artist, known for her empowerment anthems and body positivity, shared unfiltered images showcasing her dramatic change, dispelling notions that her new frame is a result of quick-fix solutions.

“In light of all these magazines and blogs wanting me to be on Ozempic soooo bad – here’s the truth! I work my arse off, training 3x a week,” Lizzo posted, laying bare the dedication that has gone into her new physique.

In a candid moment, she described her ongoing “intentional weight release journey”, which she began in 2023, highlighting the significant effort and lifestyle changes that have accompanied this process.

The singer elaborated on her extensive regimen, detailing a multi-faceted approach that incorporates personal training, dietary adjustments, and self-care practices.

“I work my arse off, training 3x a week, daily sauna & cardio, adding animal protein back into my diet, hiring a chef who helps me meal prep and keeps track of what I put into my body in a calorie deficit, cutting out sugary Starbucks & full-fat sodas & potato crisps…

“I quit drinking for the longest… (but I’m drinking again because I earned it!)” she wrote.

Lizzo’s commitment extends beyond a mere workout schedule.

She actively participates in activities like pickleball, hiking and dancing.

“I detox! Once a month! I also get holistic body work done, wood therapy and lymphatic massage. I’m so happy and proud of what I’ve done, and no one can take that away from me,” she emphatically stated.

Wood therapy massage, also known as maderotherapy, is a type of massage that utilizes various wooden tools to manipulate the body’s muscles, tissues, and skin.

It is a non-invasive technique that aims to reduce cellulite, improve circulation, and promote lymphatic drainage, among other benefits.

In the past, Lizzo has acknowledged having used Ozempic, a medication often prescribed for type 2 diabetes that has garnered attention for its weight loss effects, she is adamant that her current success is primarily due to her own efforts.

“Ozempic works because you eat less food, yeah? So if you eat right, it makes you feel full,” she mused in a prior episode of the Just Trish podcast.

“But if you can just do that on your own and get mind over matter, it’s the same thing.”

In tandem with her health journey, Lizzo faces challenges outside of her weight transformation.

Last year, the singer was embroiled in controversy following a lawsuit filed by several of her former backup dancers, accusing her of allegedly fostering a “hostile, abusive work environment” and engaging in weight-shaming behaviours – accusations she has firmly denied.

Addressing her critics, she expressed on social media, “With passion comes hard work and high standards. Sometimes I have to make hard decisions but it’s never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or like they aren’t valued as an important part of the team.”

Affirming her empathy towards body shaming, she shared, “I know what it feels like to be body shamed on a daily basis, and would absolutely never criticise or terminate an employee because of their weight.”

Lizzo’s transparent approach not only responds to her critics but also champions an ongoing dialogue about body image, self-care and the hard work that often goes unnoticed within the entertainment industry.
