From Tax Evasion to Murder Charges: Who was Andre Naude in SA's underworld web

Andre Naude, an alleged underworld kingpin, was not new to controversy.

The murder-accused was killed in a hail of bullets on Voortrekker Road in Parow on Thursday afternoon.

His murder comes more than seven months after his friend and business partner Mark Lifman was gunned down in a shopping mall parking lot in George in November last year.

The duo was both charged with the murder of Brian Wainstein.

Western Cape police have launched a manhunt for Naude’s killers, who came under fire alongside his bodyguards in Parow.

But who is Andre Naude, and what links does he allegedly have to the underworld?

Naude, 55, was the owner of a security company. He is currently out on bail for Wainstein’s murder.

Naude is a friend of the alleged leader of the Sexy Boys gang, Jerome ‘Donkie’ Booysen.

Booysen was seen at the scene of the shooting as Naude’s body lay next to his double-cab bakkie.

Naude and Booysen were frequently seen together, and the duo attended the court proceedings in George of Johannes Jacobs and Gert Bezuidenhout, the men alleged to have murdered Lifman.

At the time of Lifman’s death, he was the main accused in connection with the August 2017 murder of Brian Wainstein.

Wainstein, dubbed the “steroid king”, was an international steroid smuggler who was also wanted in the United States.

Wainstein was shot execution-style while sleeping next to his partner and daughter.

The State alleged that Lifman, Booysen, and Naude masterminded the murder to protect their alleged interests in the nightclub security and steroid rackets.

The group is accused of running a violent underworld enterprise, listing charges that include conspiracy to commit murder, money laundering, illegal possession of firearms, and obstruction of justice.

While the matter is still enrolled on the court roll, it is unclear whether Naude’s murder will have any effect on the case.

R10 million Tax Evasion

In April 2019, Naude was accused of owing the South African Revenue Services (SARS) R10 million.

An order by the Western Cape High Court allowed the Sheriff to confiscate all removable furniture from three of Naude’s properties in Plattekloof, Durbanville, and Bellville, stating Naude owes the taxman R10,870,462.59.

At the time, furniture, TVs, and other household items were carried out of his Plattekloof house by officials from the AGU and South African Revenue Services (Sars).

At the time, police said they could not divulge information regarding an ongoing police investigation.

Extortion

At that time, Naude and another accused implicated in the Wainstein matter, Sam Farquharson, were arrested for attempting to extort a Blaauwberg business owner.

The duo faced charges of intimidation, extortion, assault, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, and attempted kidnapping and were released on R10,000 bail.

Second Hit

In July 2019, Naude survived a hit on his life. Several shots were fired at him in Durbanville in Cape Town, in a parking lot.

At the time, police confirmed that an attempted murder case had been opened.
