The Gauteng police have indicated that they are closing in on the suspect linked to the murder of 11-year-old Jayden Lee Meek who was found raped and dead on the steps of his home in Fleurhof.

“We can only confirm that our investigation is at an advanced stage,” said Colonel Mvela Masondo on Sunday.

This comes as residents of Fleurhof marched to the Florida Police Station, calling for justice after the tragic death of the 11-year-old on Saturday.

Addressing members of the community, Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka, the District Police Commissioner for West Rand, indicated that that members of the forensic investigations were in advanced stages in uncovering the suspects behind this gruesome ordeal, assuring them that suspects linked to Meek’s death would soon be arrested.

According to police, Jayden-Lee was dropped off by his scholar transport on Tuesday afternoon but never arrived at his home. The following day, his lifeless body was discovered undressed on a staircase within the residential complex where he lived.

One of the members of the community who participated in the march indicated that as a single mother, she too had in the recent past experienced the loss that Jaden’s mom is going through.

“As a mother, I feel for the parents of Jayden-Lee as I also went through the same thing that just happened to Jayden’s mom, and all I can say is what did our children do to deserve all this. As parents with children, we do not feel safe in this community,” she stated.

With police visibility said to be minimal in the area as Fleurhof shares a police station with Meadowlands and Florida residents, Lori Richards indicated that more needs to be done in order to get the community feeling safe.

“We demand more patrol vehicles be allocated to our area without delay. Additionally, we insist that Fleurhof be formally designated a policing sector or two given its size and density. The current policing model does not reflect the realities on the ground, and communities are suffering as a result.”

“South Africa, what is wrong with us…we need to change as a community, we just need to learn to protect our children because this is too much,” she said.
