The ‘second half’ of the IPL resumed on Saturday with Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Kolkata Knight Riders at the heavily secured M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Andrew Breetzke, CEO of the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), confirmed that enhanced security measures have been implemented for the remainder of the league. He said the changes, focusing primarily on travel and ground security, would apply to all players participating in the IPL — not just the eight South Africans.
Security protocols were revised after threats of disruption emerged in early May, prompting a week-long suspension of the league. The safety of fans, players, and stakeholders came under scrutiny following a terrorist attack in Kashmir, northern India.
According to reports in Indian media, more than 1 000 police officers were deployed at Saturday’s fixture between RCB and KKR, which featured three South African players – Lungi Ngidi (RCB), and Anrich Nortje and Quinton de Kock (KKR).
“We have implemented additional security measures for the remainder of the season. That won’t just affect our South African players but all of the players still in the league,” Breetzke told Independent Media. “This includes everything from travel and ground security to their accommodation. All of those areas have been thoroughly reviewed.”
Earlier in the week, Breetzke stated that SACA had consulted its independent security personnel on the ground in India to assess the situation and respond to any emerging threats. He added that the situation is being monitored continuously.
Breetzke also confirmed that he remains in contact with the South African players to provide them with regular updates.
Sunday’s match between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings will feature two of South Africa’s rising cricket stars — Marco Jansen and Lhuan-dré Pretorius. Pretorius is set to make his debut for the Royals following a standout SA20 season with the Paarl Royals, where he claimed top batting honours.
