In the early hours of Tuesday, police in KwaZulu-Natal apprehended five people for illegally possessing weapons, ammunition, and narcotics at a fueling station in KwaMashu.

“Police officers, who are members of Public Order Policing (POP), were conducting patrols and stop and search operations when they spotted a vehicle with five young men at a filling station in Bridge City, KwaMashu.

“Vigilant police officers approached the vehicle and during the subsequent search, five suspects were found in possession of a firearm each and several rounds of ammunition,” said police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

Police discovered substances presumed to be narcotics in the suspects’ possession. The driver of the car claimed to be an e-hailing driver hired by the suspects, but he failed to present the license for the pistol discovered in his hands.

The accused, who are in their late teens or early twenties, will appear in court shortly.

On Monday morning, three suspected murderers were shot and fatally wounded, in a shoot-out with police at Amaoti in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal.

The back-to-back incidents comes after provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi held a strategic meeting with police commanders last week in Durban.

At the meeting, Mkhwanazi stressed the importance of cracking down on crime and urged law enforcement to restore safety across KwaZulu-Natal communities.
