South African fitness trainer and entrepreneur Sbahle Mpisane, also known as ‘Fitness Bunnie’, recently opened up about a painful experience that left her questioning her appearance and confidence.
Taking to her Instagram stories, Sbahle shared how a friend of 14 years made a comment that cut deep. “The best friend of 14yrs that I was conversing with on Sunday, who stated that I genetically look old, has chosen to block and unblock me, resulting in us no longer following each other! I guess my mistake was exposing the conversation in search of confirmation, my apologies for taking it too personally Miss babyface,” she wrote.
Sbahle didn’t name the friend but admitted the words had a major impact on her emotionally and mentally. “Perhaps I misjudged the impact of her words! In any case, I chose not to reveal her name or respond further. I had to rush out of the gym and confront my reflection, the one I’ve been told I’ve inherited genetically. It hit me hard—my confidence took a serious blow. I found myself emotionally eating all Sunday, seeking comfort in food. It wasn’t great, but sharing my feelings and reading through the flood of supportive DMs felt incredibly comforting. If I’m wrong, it will be a learning curve!!!”
In another post, Sbahle shared a screenshot of a follower, @preddy_earl, who also made a rude comment about her face: “Not realy old but there’s just something not right about your face.” In response, Sbahle replied, “@preddy_earl what do you see that’s not right about my face so I can accept or fix it.”
She then added in a caption, “What pleasure do you find in belittling someone’s beauty? It’s hateful to use the words you do when I’ve been through so much and survived. But who am I to cry right:)”
Sbahle also shared a photo of herself from 2018, showing the aftermath of her serious car accident, where her face and skin were marked with scars. She then posted a current photo from 2024, showing how far she’s come—her face now looking healed and radiant.
In 2018, Sbahle was involved in a horrific car crash after losing control of her BMW 4 Series and crashing into a tree. She sustained multiple injuries, including broken legs and a head injury that caused memory loss. She was in hospital for several months and spent 11 months in a wheelchair. Her ankle remains damaged, and she still wears a moon boot for support..
Among the negative comments, there were also messages of love and encouragement. One follower, @faithlovemkhize, wrote, “Don’t take everything to heart you look beautiful mama.” Another supporter, @zakithi_duma, said, “Oh Sbahle I’m so sorry mama. I’d say it’s jealousy because what does she mean you look old?? With that face and that body… tell her to quit lying!”
Despite the pain and judgment she sometimes faces online, Sbahle has become an inspiration by continuing to share her recovery journey and her focus on health and healing.
