Cannes Film Festival enforces strict dress code: No nudity or oversized gowns allowed

Revealing, barely-there ensembles may be a popular choice on many red carpets, but they won’t be welcome at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Although the prestigious event held annually in Cannes, France, already enforces a strict dress code, stars like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner have previously pushed the boundaries by wearing daring, see-through gowns.

However, new guidelines aim to draw a firmer line.

“For reasons of decency, nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival,” reads the official charter for festival-goers.

This means bold fashion statements like the one Bianca Censori, Kanye West’s wife, made at the Grammy Awards, where she wore a completely sheer mini dress, will not be acceptable at Cannes.

But the crackdown doesn’t stop there.

This year’s updated rules also target oversized gowns with dramatic trains.

Designers and stylists will need to rethink their red carpet strategies, as these voluminous looks will no longer be allowed.

“Voluminous outfits, particularly those with large trains that obstruct the flow of guests or complicate seating in the theatre, are not permitted,” states the official guide.

“Festival staff will be required to deny Red Carpet access to anyone who does not comply.”

Additionally, large bags, including tote bags, backpacks, and similarly oversized items, are banned during gala screenings to ensure smooth entry and seating.

The Cannes Film Festival kicks off today and runs through May 24, 2025.

With these new restrictions in place, all eyes will be on how the stars adapt to the stricter dress code.
