Three suspected murderers have been shot and fatally wounded on Monday morning, in a shoot-out with police at Amaoti in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal.
The crime scene was still active, and updates would be provided after the SA Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the information.
This is one of numerous shoot-outs in the province that ended fatally for alleged criminals.
On Sunday night in an unrelated incident, five suspected criminals — sought for the murder of a couple — died in a shoot-out with police.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the KZN police spokesperson, said the shooting occurred in the Mophela section of the Mpumalanga township near Hammersdale.
“Police gathered intelligence about the suspects driving along the Mophela main road. Police caught up with the suspects and signalled for them to stop. The suspects ignored police instructions and instead opened fire at law enforcement officers,” Netshiunda said.
“Police returned fire, and during the shoot-out, five suspects were shot and fatally wounded.”
He stated that a comprehensive search of the suspects’ car had yet to be done, but three guns were discovered in their possession.
“The suspects were wanted for the murder of a 66-year-old man who was shot and killed at his home in the Ekwandeni area on Saturday last week,” he said.
He said the man escaped a shower of gunshots in January, and his wife was shot and died at their house in February of this year.
“The suspects are also linked to the murder of two police officers.”
Netshuinda said investigations are continuing, and there are possibilities that the suspects could be linked to more violent crimes.
