They may not have been involved in the Nedbank Cup final this weekend, but on Sunday Mamelodi Sundowns showed once more why they are the dominant team in the land with a 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC.
The runaway Betway Premiership leaders now need just one point from their two remaining matches to win their eighth league title in a row.
Though second-placed Orlando Pirates have two games in hand over Sundowns, they can only reach a maximum of 67 points – the total the Brazilians have now accumulated.
In fact, Sundowns have a goal difference of 47 while Pirates have 19, which demonstrates the gulf between the sides.
‘Teamwork and Unity’ Shine in Victory Over Stellenbosch
Against Stellenbosch, Lucas Ribeiro, Iqraam Rayners and Arthur Sales were all on the scoresheet, which was another thing that pleased coach Miguel Cardoso.
“What’s important is that we saw Iqraam [Rayners], Tashreeq [Matthews], Lucas [Ribeiro], Arthur [Sales] even then we saw Thapelo [Maseko] enter at a good level,” said Cardoso.
“So, it’s important that the team produces football and the goals will flourish naturally and I don’t worry about who scores.”
Cardoso went on to explain that his concerns were few when it came to his charges.
“I worry if the players who are inside the pitch work for the team in order for the team to score and that’s been happening. Lucas, today made a wonderful pass for Iqraam for the goal.
“This is the spirit we have, values we have and having written in our shirts ‘ubuntu botho’ it means we work as a team and not individuals so I’m always happy when we score, play together and enjoy football that’s the important thing.”
