The oft-maligned Motaung brothers, Bobby and Kaizer Jr., because of Kaizer Chiefs’ appalling lack of success and dismal Premiership record in recent seasons, have finally experienced the gratifying sensation of achievement.
Chiefs stunned Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday to end a 10-year trophy drought and qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup next season.
This triumph marks a significant milestone for the club, as it ends the trophy drought that has weighed heavily on the shoulders of the Motaung brothers. For years, the brothers have faced increasing scrutiny due to a lack of silverware and a disappointing performance in the Premiership.
Their underwhelming results had often led to heavy criticism aimed at them, highlighting the urgent need for a change in fortunes.
The achievement comes under the stewardship of Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr, appointed in July 2021. It has been a challenging path, filled with ups and downs, but he remained steadfast in his vision.
The victory will go down in the annals of Kaizer Chiefs’ rich history and secure them a spot in the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup, adding to the significance of the moment.
“I want to give thanks to Nedbank. They have been an amazing sponsor over the years. Everyone can see how they always captured the imagination and dreams of people, and today was a dream for us (Kaizer Chiefs),” he said.
“Today was one of the most special days of my life. I know the birth of my children will be the most special days, but this one was unique, a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
“I am very privileged to be here with the players, technical staff and everyone involved in the club.”
Reflecting on the club’s journey, Bobby Motaung, the club’s football manager, commended the resilience of the current generation of players.
“It’s about the journey we’ve been through, a hard-fought journey. This trophy is well-deserved for the boys, the supporters, and our chairman, who has been patient,” said Bobby Motaung.
As the Chiefs gear up to represent the PSL on the continental stage, the focus will shift to strengthening the squad. Bobby Motaung hinted at potential reinforcements, stating, “We are still going to beef it up because we are going to Africa now, but what’s important is the journey we travelled.”
Ultimately, the victory serves not only as a testament to the players’ perseverance but also as a beacon of hope for the passionate Chiefs supporters who have long awaited this moment.
“I think they deserve this trophy, they deserve this final, they deserve the happiness,” Motaung concluded.
As they celebrated this monumental victory, the two brothers paid heartfelt tribute to their father, club chairman Kaizer Motaung, who supported them through a challenging journey to reclaim silverware.
The narrative surrounding the Motaung brothers may finally transform from one of criticism to one of pride. With the tangible fruits of their labour now manifesting, eyes will undoubtedly be set on how the club can build on this success moving forward.
