Strandfontein Beach hummed with excitement as the 9Miles Project launched its inaugural 100Wave Challenge recently, a lively community event aimed at empowering vulnerable youth through surf therapy, mentorship, and education programmes. The 100Wave Challenge, a globally recognised fundraiser originating from California, made its debut on South African shores, attracting a spirited gathering of surfers, supporters, and volunteers keen to make a difference.

As dawn broke over the Atlantic, surfers paddled out into the surf, with determination glinting in their eyes. Leading the charge was a group known as “The Locals” from Muizenberg, who became the first team to conquer the exhilarating feat of catching 100 waves in a single day. Among the participants were beginners who were cheered on by dedicated local surf coaches, alongside the fantastic team from Nexgen Surf School, ensuring that everyone had the necessary guidance and encouragement to rise to the occasion.

Among the day’s shining stars was Gabriel, celebrating his status as the youngest solo surfer, who not only completed the challenge but dazzled the crowd by being the first to ride all 100 waves. His fearless spirit epitomised the essence of the event. Meanwhile, Faieq, a passionate product of the 9Miles Project and an exceptional student, raised the highest funds as a solo surfer, exceeding his fundraising goals as he sought to give back to an organisation that supported his own journey of growth.

Thanks to the dedication and generosity of participants, volunteers, donors, and partners, the event exceeded expectations, raising over R100,000 to support 9Miles Project’s ongoing mission to uplift at-risk youth and marginalised communities.

As the surfers battled the waves, the atmosphere on the beach buzzed with energy, featuring a plethora of free activities for families and beachgoers. Live music set the tone for the day, complemented by drumming sessions, sandcastle competitions, beach volleyball, kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and even sailing in the tidal pool—a partnership initiative with The Little Optimist Trust. In a bid to foster environmental responsibility, participants also took part in a beach clean-up, reinforcing the event’s commitment to safeguarding the local environment.

Co-founder Sher’Neil Savel reflected on the day, stating, “Sometimes you have to take on a challenge, in order for others to overcome their challenges and limitations… and that is exactly what this was all about. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who made this day possible, and we can’t wait to do it all over again in 2026!”
