Bulls must strike a balance between forwards and backs as they aim to sustain winning momentum in URC

The Bulls will look to maintain winning momentum in their final two matches of the United Rugby Championship (URC) round-robin phase, starting with Cardiff on Saturday in Pretoria.

After their famous exploits in Ireland and Scotland a fortnight ago, the Jake White-coached outfit knows that full points from both clashes could propel them into second place on the log ahead of the Glasgow Warriors.

Following two impressive overseas performances that saw them beat defending champions Glasgow and Munster, a former title-winning side, White’s troops should have the advantage in the decisive fixtures.

They are on a four-match winning streak since losing to the Stormers at Loftus but have comfortably looked like South Africa’s premier side in the URC.

White has underlined the importance of finishing strong, especially as the final league games are not just about bagging the all-important maximum 10 points but also maintaining that winning edge they currently have.

With their squad rotation, they have been able to strike that perfect balance almost week in and week out. Looking at the playoffs it’s probably time for them to settle on combinations that could push them to another finals berth.

They will definitely look to leverage the home-ground advantage to lay a platform with their forwards and finally get their backline running again. Against the Warriors and Munster, they’ve relied primarily on the pack to get them over the line in the tight contests.

Now, it’s time for the backs, with Springbok veteran Willie le Roux at the helm, to show they can blend their skillset with the power of the front rankers to put an end to Cardiff’s ambitions of reaching the URC playoffs.

Of course, the Pretoria side will do the Stormers a massive favour if they send the Welsh side down to Cape Town with no points and low confidence.

Should the Bulls succeed in getting the 10 points over the next two games and bag the second place on the log in the process, they will head into the playoffs not just as contenders, but as one of the favourites and in-form sides in the tournament.
