Personal Travel Philosophy
Glamour: Maps, you’ve travelled extensively around the world. What ignites your passion for travel, and how has it shaped your perspective on life?
Maps: Travel, for me, is about expanding my horizons and connecting with different cultures on a deeper level. Every destination offers a unique lens through which I learn more about the world and, in turn, about myself. It’s not just about ticking places off a list; it’s the experiences, the people I meet, and the stories I gather along the way that shape my worldview. Travel constantly reminds me that there’s so much more to life beyond what we know, and it fuels my curiosity to keep exploring and growing.
Dubai’s Unique Offerings
Glamour: With Dubai’s iconic blend of modernity and tradition, what experiences or landmarks should South Africans prioritise when visiting?
Maps: Absolutely, you can’t visit Dubai without starting at the Burj Khalifa—the views from the top are simply breathtaking. But beyond the skyscrapers, I’d recommend exploring the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood to really get a sense of Dubai’s cultural roots. The bustling souks are a must for anyone wanting to experience the vibrant local markets, and of course, a desert safari is essential—it captures the adventurous spirit of the city while immersing you in its natural beauty and cultural richness. It’s the perfect balance of old and new Dubai.
Cultural Connections
Glamour: As a South African, how do you see the cultural offerings in Dubai resonating with our local experiences?
Maps: One of the most striking similarities is the warmth and hospitality—something we South Africans deeply value. Dubai’s art scene is incredibly vibrant, much like ours, and it offers a creative space that feels familiar. The culinary experiences also create an interesting bridge between cultures, allowing you to explore diverse flavors while still feeling connected. What really stands out is how Dubai celebrates its diversity, blending tradition and modernity in a way that mirrors our own cultural tapestry. There’s a lot we can learn from how the city embraces and showcases its rich heritage alongside its modern influences.
Luxury and Adventure
Glamour: Luxury and adventure are synonymous with Dubai. What are your must-try experiences for anyone visiting the city?
Maps: For luxury, you can’t go wrong with the Burj Al Arab—it’s an iconic experience that really sets the tone for Dubai’s opulence. Dining at places like Atmosphere in the Burj Khalifa is also unforgettable; the views alone make it worth it. On the adventure side, dune bashing in the desert is a must—it’s exhilarating and gives you a real sense of Dubai’s natural beauty. I’ve still got a few bucket-list experiences to tick off, like skydiving over Palm Jumeirah, but from what I hear, it’s an absolute thrill. Each of these experiences leaves you with a sense of awe and excitement, whether you’re seeking luxury or adventure.
A Memorable Encounter
Glamour: Can you share a memorable moment from your travels in Dubai that truly encapsulated the spirit of the city for you?
Maps: One moment that really stands out for me was visiting Al Seef, where I had the opportunity to interact with local artisans. Their passion for their craft and the stories they shared about their heritage really struck a chord with me because it speaks to my love for art and creativity. It was a reminder of how powerful human connection can be, even in a city as modern as Dubai. Another memorable experience was at Bab Al Shams. The traditional Arabic architecture set against the desert backdrop felt like discovering a hidden gem. It’s a perfect reflection of Dubai’s ability to blend the old with the new, creating something truly unique.
Travel Inspiration for South Africans
Glamour: Finally, how would you inspire fellow South Africans to embrace global travel?
Maps: Travel is one of the greatest tools for personal growth. It opens doors to new experiences, new ways of thinking, and fresh perspectives that can really change how we see the world—and ourselves. I’m privileged to have been able to travel the world and immerse myself in new and incredible experiences. By exploring different cultures, we not only enrich our own lives but also foster a deeper understanding of the global community. Dubai, with its mix of modernity and tradition, is an ideal gateway for South Africans to step out and embrace the world stage. It’s about stepping beyond your comfort zone and discovering how much more there is out there.
