A new series titled Mpondoland, currently being filmed by Origins Pictures, aims to bring the rich heritage and history of the AmaMpondo people to life. Featuring a stellar cast that includes veteran actress Tina Jaxa, Anele Mtoti, Siziphiwe Maqubela, and Luzoko Nqeto, the show promises to be a cultural journey. However, controversy is already brewing, as the AmaMpondo Royal House has voiced concerns over the production’s authenticity, stating that they were not consulted before filming began.

According to reports by ZiMoja, the royal family is worried about the potential inaccuracies in the portrayal of their history. Prince Mbasa Sigcau, speaking on behalf of the AmaMpondo Royal House, shared his concerns, saying, “We were recently made aware of the show through the media—we were never consulted on the scripting and the accuracy of the information being shared on the show. We are definitely skeptical and very concerned that production will go ahead with a historic show without consulting us.”

Among the royal family’s specific concerns is the language used by the cast. Prince Sigcau pointed out, “Secondly, we are worried about the language, as the cast does not seem to speak isiMpondo, which could possibly dilute the history and culture.”

The family’s reservations have raised questions about the importance of cultural sensitivity and accuracy in historical dramas. At the time of publication, Chumisa Cosa, a member of the production team, had yet to respond to inquiries regarding these concerns.

As Mpondoland continues filming, all eyes are on the production, with many hoping that these issues will be addressed before the show hits screens.
