A security guard with a teaching degree from Unisa is bragging about his patience. Mr Raymond Vusumuzi Mkhize (34) from Ntapuka, in eNdwedwe, says he has put his trust in God to find a teaching job which he loves. He currently works full-time as a security guard at KwaNompande primary school, and says that one day he wishes to teach officially.

Mr Mkhize was speaking to the source iLANGA on his daily job of guarding the school gate after receiving his qualification as a teacher, he completed his Bachelor of Education degree, which he did for four years. He says that he only got this degree because he was passionate about teaching. “I finished my matriculation in 2008, I volunteered, I taught maths at the school where I work now. I did this for two years, then I left to do a security certificate.

After receiving this certificate, I worked for two security companies separately,” he said.

“I received a phone call from the same school informing me that they are looking for a security guard, I didn’t hesitate to go back there and work,” he said happily. He encourages others that it is important to follow your dream. “I have started working as a security guard at this school and I thought it was better to continue with my dream, I enrolled at Unisa and did a teaching degree with a major in maths.

For the 8 years I have been working as a security guard at this school, I wish to see myself teaching students officially. Although I am happy but it hurts me to sit guarding the gate instead of teaching them. Now I help them after school and help them with maths. “There have been attempts for me to help them study during the day, parents complain that I can’t do two jobs at the same time,” he said.

His greatest desire is to see himself succeeding in this field. “Although I am not employed as a teacher at the moment, I am determined to continue to advance in this field until I obtain a doctorate in it.
