Soshanguve was on top of the Twitter trends as all eyes were on the burial of Prince “King Mongol” Mahlangu. Prince was allegedly a king pin in a syndicate that specialised in hijacking cars and sending them to Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. If you check his Instagram page(king_prince_79), it is evident that the guy lived a fine life of luxury cars and top designers’ clothes. Prince was shot and killed last week in Sunnyside in what is suspected to be a hit. However, not everyone mourned his passing as more people were critical of his lifestyle and how he acquired his wealth.
Prince Mahlangu’s funeral symbolized a fashion show as mourners came dressed to the nines. Mourners came from all walks of life dolled up in expensive designer clothes and driving luxurious flashy German machines. The convoy to the funeral was a fleet of Mercedes Benz vehicles. Videos of people who went to shop for expensive clothes especially for the funeral are making rounds on Twitter. Apparently the family had made it clear that only 2022 models vehicles would be allowed at the funeral. Mourners were instructed to wear expensive clothes and not fake and they adhered indeed. In another video, a guy can be seen paying for an outfit with stacks of cash. Some can be seen shopping for some expensive labels before the funeral.

During his funeral, some speakers praised Prince for his generosity. A speaker narrated how he would buy impoverished residents food and even expensive clothes to the needy. Many people are puzzled by why so many people, especially those form Soshanguve and neighbouring townships praised the deceased. This also got me thinking so much and I think I finally have an idea as to why this is the situation, I might be wrong, but anyway let’s get into it.
We live a in a world that is ruled by materialism, success is in most cases defined by how much material you have managed to acquire in your lifetime. In such a society, everyone strives relentlessly to attain as much material as possible. Better role models are the people who actually have acquired material things, regardless of how they acquired their wealth. Prince Mahlangu was one of those people who are highly idolized by people. It was well-known that he was into serious criminality but many hailed him as a hero.
Soshanguve is trending because of a criminal! They complain about crime but busy harbouring criminals in their neighbourhoods. They know these criminals and where they stay but do nothing, instead they glorify them. Welcome to South Africa!
