Seizing Addison’s CCTV may be abuse of power – Lawyer

A private legal practitioner, Professor. Kojo Appiagyei-Attuah, has cautioned that the reported disabling and removal of a CCTV monitor and control unit by National Security operatives during a raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, may constitute an abuse of power.

The operatives, led by the Director of Special Operations, Richard Jakpa, reportedly carried out the search at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge residence in Accra. The Minority has since condemned the action, accusing the operatives of misconduct.

Speaking to Citi News, Prof. Appiagyei-Attuah suggested that the removal of the CCTV system may have been an attempt to conceal an abuse of power.

“I am not sure the AG would have said when you go, use extreme force or something. The fact that they took away some cameras and CCTV footages or equipment, that may be an indication that they may have done something wrong by abusing the power that the court gave them to use to do the search.

“And so that raises some perception of naked abuse of power and that is why they wanted to take those things away.

“It wasn’t part of what they were supposed to take away if I am just relying on the information in the public space. But I don’t know the details of course. But generally, you wouldn’t expect them to take cameras and so on away.

“So in that sense, they may have done something untoward, which for that reason, they want to hide that evidence because it can lead to legal action being taken by the governor against the security forces that went to his residence.”
