Ajax Amsterdam sporting director Marc Overmars has explained why Nicolás Tagliafico’s transfer to FC Barcelona did not happen this winter. Interviewed by the official channel of the dutch club, the former winger explained that the Lancers could not let the Argentine side leave for Catalonia if they had no one to replace him. “Tagliafico’s deal with Barca was very difficult. I wish Nico the best, but we also have to make sure we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot.” launched Overmars.
The 29-year-old left-back, who is under contract with Ajax until June 2023, had informed Ajax during this transfer window that he wanted to leave the club to join Barcelona and thus compete with Jordi Alba. “If Barcelona want to sign the player on loan, we must have a replacement in this position”, said the former Dutch international. The Barcelona leaders had offered Alejandro Baldé (18) as a replacement, but the Dutch side weren’t convinced by the player, which made the deal impossible.
