Many of Scotland’s Sunday papers focus on objections to a transgender prisoner applying to be moved to a women’s jail. The Daily Record first reported that Tiffany Scott’s transfer application had been approved and was likely to happen later this year. Scott was given lifelong restriction after she admitted stalking a 13-year-old girl. The Sunday Times says Nicola Sturgeon is under pressure over the issue of housing transgender prisoners, as it follows a U-turn over the imprisonment of rapist Isla Bryson in Cornton Vale.

Isla Bryson was remanded to Cornton Vale after being convicted of raping two women before she changed gender. She began transitioning from a man to a woman while awaiting trial. The Scottish Mail on Sunday says the first minister announced Bryson would not be allowed to serve her sentence at the jail in Stirling following “huge public backlash”.

The Scottish Sunday Express leads with the Scottish Conservatives’ claim that placing Tiffany Scott in Cornton Vale would risk the safety of vulnerable women. The Scottish government has said it was an operational matter for the Scottish Prison Service.

The Sunday Post interviews former first minister Henry McLeish on the matter. Mr McLeish said Scotland must learn from other countries about how to manage trans prisoners and called for a review, the paper reports.

The Sunday Mail leads with a woman who was jailed with “violent” trans prisoners – one serving a sentence for murder, the other for domestic violence. Amanda Benson is quoted in the paper saying her nerves were “frazzled with fear” during her time in the prison.

The Sunday Telegraph also features “Sturgeon under fire” over the prison row, however its lead story is on the NHS crisis. It reports that over half a million patients a year could be treated via video link under new NHS England plans designed to relieve pressure on A&E departments and set to be published on Monday. The paper reports that ministers think a fifth of all emergency admissions could be avoided if the right treatment can be brought to patients at home.

Scotland on Sunday leads with “mass redundancies and closures” of companies in the arts sector, according to trade unions. The paper says the arts faces a “bleak future” if left unsupported, as artists, venues and companies are still recovering from the impact of the pandemic.

The National splashes a piece by former chief strategist for Yes Scotland Stephen Noon, who says supporters of Scottish independence need to “move past” the mindset of the 45 – a name adopted by the movement referring to percentage of votes in favour of independence in the 2014 referendum.

And TV presenter Helen Skelton had to dodge a glass bottle thrown in her direction during a nearby brawl while on a night out with friends, according to the Scottish Sun on Sunday. The front page carries a quote from a source saying Skelton was “shocked at the violence”.
