Many villagers there were left stranded after fires, first seen in gardens, tore through rows of houses. One resident likened the destruction to the aftermath of the Blitz. “It was like a warzone. Down the actual main road, all the windows had exploded out, all the roofs had caved,” said Tim Stock, whose own home was destroyed.
