This week, Microsoft released its fiscal year 2022 second quarter report, and with it revealed that Windows 10 and Windows 11 run on more than 1.4 billion active PCs monthly. According to the company’s CEO, this would be the “rebirth of the computer”.
The growth of the PC market is evident. From the third quarter of the previous fiscal year to the current moment, 100 million active Windows computers were added (also according to Microsoft’s own data). It is likely that part of the increase was brought about by the release of Windows 11 in 2021.
Without providing details on the information revealed, Nadella notes that computer usage has increased since the introduction of Win 11. “Three months later, and we are very pleased with the response to Windows 11,” he said at the investor conference.

Windows 11 was introduced in June last year and it didn’t take long to be put into public trial. In October, the operating system was released with many of the new features promised by Microsoft, including a new interface, app store, improved native tools and much more.
Much of the system’s success is probably due to the fact that it is free for old users — anyone who uses Windows 10 (and has a compatible PC) can migrate to the new OS without paying anything. Even the obstacles imposed by the minimum requirements do not seem to prevent the popularization of the system, although it has, indeed, slowed down adoption a bit.
Microsoft Store is more popular
Despite not distributing a multitude of famous apps, the Microsoft Store has grown in popularity in recent months. The company says that users turn to the store to download programs much more often than before in the old version of Windows 10.
This finding is, in fact, very important for the platform. It would be useless if the store were a channel for downloading apps, if most users still used the browser to download them.
Installing applications from the Microsoft Store offers specific advantages, such as updates automatically managed by the platform, centralized in a single panel. Even rivals to Microsoft programs, such as Firefox, are available for download from the store.
However, the Windows store still suffers from a huge variety of fake or deceptive apps. A search for the new Media Player, for example, shows countless “alternatives” for downloading — and most of them aren’t even a music player. It’s similar to what Google’s Play Store suffers from on Android.
