Children’s book educates about cybersecurity in virtual exploration adventure –

Cyberbullying, using passwords and sharing photos and personal information are sensitive topics for early childhood education. Renee Tarun, Vice CISO and Vice President of Information Security at Fortinet, and pegagogue Susan Burg have written a book to address these and other critical points for children’s safety.

Called “Cyber Safe: Tips from a Dog for Internet Safety”, the title also provides tips for parents and caregivers – who should keep an eye out for minors’ online activities. Renee points out that more and more children are connected for longer periods of time. “The book helps protect them by teaching them how to behave and stay safe online.”

In the work, the dog Lacey takes the kitten Gabbi on a journey to learn that the internet is very useful, but that you have to use it carefully. “Cyber Safe” brings cybersecurity basics and general information about threats and criminal tactics, with fun illustrations and easy language for little explorers of the digital world.

In a scenario where many students still attend classes virtually and many parents work remotely, cybercriminals have the opportunity to attack and steal information. Children are a vulnerable target as they have little understanding of the methods used. It is crucial, then, that they are aware of cybersecurity best practices.

Pedro Paixão, general manager and vice president of international sales at Fortinet for Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, points out that the company protects people, devices and data everywhere. “Fortinet is committed to educating the global community on cybersecurity knowledge and skills. This book should help young people stay safer in their digital interactions,” he says.

Course content

Title content is based on Fortinet’s NSE1 and NSE2 courses, which provide cybersecurity basics. Trainings are offered by the NSE Training Institute, which brings cybersecurity education to academic institutions and non-profit organizations.

In 2020, the entity launched the Information Security Awareness and Training Service, which is available free of charge in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Any organization can use the service to raise cybersecurity awareness among their non-technical staff.

The book is available for free download here. Fortinet encourages the nomination of elementary and high schools so that the title reaches even more interested parties. The work is aimed at caregivers and children, especially those aged between seven and 12 years.
