Flash shows that Green Lanterns don’t use the full potential of rings –

Common sense indicates that any Green Lantern knows how to use the energy ring better than other DC heroes like the Flash. However, we’re talking about comics, and what seems obvious often doesn’t apply to their stories, as shown in The Flash Annual #2, 2013, part of the editorial initiative new 52 from DC Comics.

The story has a simple plot: Barry Allen, the Flash, and Hal Jordan, one of the Green Lanterns, are suddenly transported to an alien planet while they were separately investigating a case of missing children.

Upon arriving on the extraterrestrial planet, they discover that children are being abducted to this location and trained to participate in deadly fights, as gladiators, for the sport of the local population.

The two heroes see themselves weakened on that planet and, in order to escape, they promise that in the future they will be competitors in the arena. They escape, along with the children, and then the story jumps to the present day, with Flash and Green Lantern being charged with the deal.

Taking part in the arena, the two heroes end up getting in the middle of an all-on-all fight and together they defeat most of the competitors. But only one can emerge victorious to face the planet’s champion, and Flash is the chosen one for this clash.

Thinking about how to facilitate his teammate’s combat, Hal Jordan lends the Green Lantern ring to Barry Allen. But while Hal himself and other members of the Green Lantern Corps have had to train for years to use the artifact, the scarlet sprinter uses his quick thinking to figure out how the object works.

Then, using his quick thinking again, the Flash discovers a weakness in the opponent and does what no Green Lantern usually does with the artifact’s powers: shoots a blast of green energy into the warrior’s private parts. Victory comes next.

In the end, it’s not exactly a more efficient way to use the ring, but it sure as hell wouldn’t be something Hal Jordan would do, making him have a lot more difficulty against the alien planet’s champion. Anyway, the moment is still an interesting passage in the lives of both heroes.
