Fake alcohol? Synthetic drink promises the same effects, but no harm –

What if there was a drink that could generate the psychological effect of alcohol, but without the harm that normally comes with it? It was with this question in mind that a British company called GABA Labs developed Sentia Spirits, a herbal drink that promises to make the person more relaxed and sociable, without a hangover or drunkenness per se.

For now, the drink mimics a sensation equivalent to drinking two glasses of wine, but the founders have already created a synthetic alcohol molecule (not yet for sale) that can be compared to the effect of any drink on the market. However, for the time being, there is insufficient evidence regarding the effectiveness of this product.

Experts are still not convinced that alcohol can actually be imitated in a healthy way, and fear that a synthetic version could present new risks. The ambitious invention of GABA Labs raises a number of questions for which there are still no answers.

Sentia Spirits works through a mixture of botanical compounds capable of stimulating the activity of gaba aminobutyric acid (GABA), one of the brain’s inhibitory neurotransmitters, responsible for, in synthesis, reducing neuronal activity in certain brain regions and generating a sensation of calm and relaxation. It is synthesized from glutamate (one of the most important neurotransmitters in our nervous system) and responsible for producing calming effects in the individual.
