Chukwu tips Eagles for success, questions timing of Rohr’s sack — Sport — –

Eguavoen, other coaches await players’ arrival

Former Super Eagles Coach, Christian Chukwu, believes the team’s interim head coach, Austin Eguavoen, has the experience to lead the side to a successful outing at Cameroon 2022 African Cup of Nations. He, however, hinges his optimism on the level of support Eguavoen gets from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Chukwu, who said Eguavoen’s experience in African football, both as an ex-national team player and a coach, stands him in good stead to do a good job in Cameroun, advised the coach to always choose the best available players for every match.

“As Super Eagles’ interim coach, who has a short time to assemble a quality team, he needs all the support he can get from the NFF and Nigerians to succeed.

“His job has been made easier by the top quality players at his disposal.”

Despite his support for Eguavoen’s appointment, the former Harambe Stars coach faults the timing of Gernot Rohr’s sack, saying the German’s record with the Super Eagles was not as bad as painted by some football analysts.

He said: “Rohr has a respectable record with the Eagles. He qualified the team for the AFCON and we are still in the race for the Cup ticket.

“He knows the players better and sacking him with just a few weeks to the Nations Cup is not right.

But, there is nothing anybody can do now than to urge the NFF to back Eguavoen to build a good team.”
MEANWHILE, Eguavoen has revealed that he will start work with available players in Abuja today, adding that he has already done the groundwork preparatory to the players’ arrival.
