What is beta hCG?
Beta hCG is the acronym for human chorionic gonadotropin, a type of hormone that is only produced by women during pregnancy and that is responsible for the appearance of the most common symptoms of pregnancy. Thus, the measurement of this hormone through a blood test is widely used as a way to confirm a possible pregnancy.

How does beta hCG let you know gestational age?
The production of beta hCG starts right after the egg is fertilized and, in general, its levels in the blood gradually increase until the 12th week of gestation, when it stabilizes and decreases again until the end of the pregnancy.
For this reason, knowing the amount of beta hCG in the blood helps the obstetrician to better understand which week of pregnancy the woman should be in, as there are stipulated ranges for the amount of beta hCG in each week of pregnancy:

For example, a woman with a beta hCG value of 3,800 mlU/ml you may receive weeks 5 and 6 as a result, as well as weeks 25 to 40. If the woman is in early pregnancy, it means that she should be in weeks 5 to 6.
