The Crown | Counselor leaves the series after disapproving representation of Lady Di –

The last two seasons of The Crown are soon coming to Netflix and audiences can’t wait to see Elizabeth Debicki living the last days of Lady Di after Emma Corrin’s award-winning portrayal of season four. However, the production has faced some setbacks, one of them being somewhat controversial: Jemima Khan, the new season’s advisor, left the set after disapproving of the way Diana would be represented on the show.

To The Sunday Times, Khan declared that she was brought to The Crown to help with the writing of the scripts for the fifth season, especially “the episodes that concerned the last few years before Diana passed away”. Now, with her leaving the recording, the counselor has declared that the brokerage agreement “it wasn’t honorable, and when I realized that that particular storyline wouldn’t necessarily be endowed with the respect or compassion I’d hoped for, I requested that all my contributions be removed from the series and declined credit.”

A spokesperson for the series denies Khan’s participation in the production, revealing that “she was never hired as a screenwriter.” The advisor would have been part of a “wide network of well-informed sources who provided information to the crew” of the show.

It’s not the first time that The Crown is accused of misrepresenting the facts on camera. In December 2020, the series raised concerns about the representation of the British Royal Family and its history. So much so that culture secretary Oliver Downden said the show is “beautifully produced as with other TV productions”, so “Netflix should make it very clear at the beginning that it is just that”. The English Member of Parliament justifies that, without a disclaimer, there is a risk that “a generation of spectators who have not lived through these events will confuse fiction with fact”.

Netflix, however, declined to insert the warning that the series is fiction and it looks like it will stay that way. Season five should start right at the beginning of the 1990s, considered one of the most troubled times for the House of Windsor. Among the main events is the divorce of Elizabeth II’s three children: Anne, Andrew and Charles. In addition, there is also the fire at Windsor Castle and the replacement of Margaret Thatcher by John Major (which will definitely be portrayed as Netflix has already cast Lee Miller in the cast).

Elizabeth Debicki will play Diana already married to Charles and with sequels from stress of world fame and his eating disorder. The fourth season was responsible for showing how troubled was the post-marital period of Lady Di and her entry into the Royal Family, which even involved an adultery with James Hewitt (Daniel Donskoy) after discovering the extramarital romance of Charles with Camilla Parker Bowles (Emerald Fennell).

The Crown has all seasons available on Netflix. The fifth season has no release date yet, but is expected to start in 2022.
