By Dan Ambrose: Eddie Hearn says Canelo Alvarez wants his revenge against Dmitry Bivol, and he won’t step aside so that he could fight unified light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed championship.
“The problem is, you’ve got Callum Smith that’s been ordered. You’ve got Canelo Alvarez, who will probably fight in May,’” said Eddie Hearn to the DAZN Boxing Show about the obstacles preventing Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev from fighting in the first half of this year.
“You’ve also got Ramadan for Artur Beterbiev. He’s probably not going to come back until the summer. So there’s a lot to sort out right now. Top Rank is going to speak to Callum Smith, and we’re going to speak to Dmitry Bivol about it. But it’s really exciting time for the sport and the division at 175.
“Canelo wants revenge [against Bivol],” said Hearn when asked if Canelo could just give up his September date so that Bivol can face Beterbiev next. “No,” Hearn said on the idea of whether Canelo will give up the September date.
“Canelo wants revenge against Dmitry Bivol. Like I said, we got a lot of irons in the fire here where we need to do what’s best for a number of fighters.
“Beterbiev-Bivol is one of the best fights in boxing. Make no mistake, the best 175-pounder in the world is Dmitry Bivol. Of course, it’s my opinion. I’m not taking unified. I’m talking the best. That’s a tremendous fight.
“I rate Artur Beterbiev. I think he’s a brilliant fighter to watch. How exciting to have the exciting fights on the cusp of boxing. As I said earlier, we need to make these fights.
“Like I said, Canelo Alvarez’s plans are to fight John Ryder and Dmitry Bivol. I spoke to Eddy Reynoso last night. We’re working on a possible venue for that fights. Obviously, there are other fights for Canelo Alvarez.
“Really, we’re planning with Eddy & Saul for this year and next year. You’ve got Plant vs. Benavidez coming up. I know Edgar Berlanga is making a lot of noise. If he can get a couple of big wins, that’s a big fight against Canelo as well.
“The priority is May against the mandatory John Ryder, and then moving towards Dmitry Bivol for undisputed at 168,” said Hearn about Canelo.
