Newcastle eyeing late Brazilian swoop

Newcastle United have kept an eye on the Brazilian market throughout this month and could opt to make a late move in the final hours of the January window.

What’s the latest?

There is not much time remaining in this month’s transfer window with Tuesday’s 11pm deadline quickly approaching but the Toon have finally brought in their first new player.

Indeed, on Sunday, it was announced the Magpies had come to an agreement with Everton over the signing of the 21-year-old Anthony Gordon.

However, there is seemingly still work that may be done on Tyneside with Jonjo Shelvey potentially needing to be replaced in the final days of the window.

And writing in his latest transfer column for GiveMeSport, insider Dean Jones has suggested a late swoop for a Brazilian could be on the cards for Dan Ashworth:

“As a side note, it’s worth being aware they have had a keen eye on the Brazilian market and might look to make a late capture from there,” he wrote.

Late swoop?

One of the players who has been linked with an interest from the Tynesiders is Matheus Franca of Flamengo with the youngster believed to be on Ashworth’s radar.

And it has been suggested the Magpies have already submitted a proposal for the 18-year-old this month but it fell short of Flamengo’s valuation.

However, this has seemingly led to a standoff between the two parties with Flamengo seemingly holding out for a bid in the region of €25m (£22m).

Are you pleased with NUFC’s window so far?

No

But with the Magpies seemingly not wanting to overpay for the youngster, it will be interesting to see whether this is a deal which potentially develops over the final hours.

There have been other links to emerge over the last day with Jonjo Shelvey seemingly on his way out of the club with the likes of Sander Berge said to be on the Toon’s radar.

And we do wonder just how much the need for a new midfielder may potentially put their interest in the Brazilian market on the backburner in the final hours of the window.

Newcastle have not looked desperate to make much of a splash in the window thus far so a late move a Brazilian could certainly provide the fans with a late boost in the window.
