Massimiliano Allegri admits Juventus relegation fear

Massimiliano Allegri has warned Juventus the club could face a relegation battle if they do not recognise their dire state of affairs.

After a poor start to the season, Juve had been closing the gap on league leaders Napoli with a run of eight straight Serie A wins, but a 15-point deduction from the FIGC for artificially inflating transfer fees has dumped the Italian giants in the bottom half of the table.

After Sunday’s loss to Monza, Juve are 13th, closer to the relegation zone than the top four in terms of points and now winless in their last three league games, and Allegri sent a sobering assessment to the club’s officials and fans.

“We picked up 38 points, but right now we have 23 and must act accordingly,” he said.

“We must get the points to secure Serie A safety. The situation has been turned upside down, but this is the reality at this moment and we must recognise that, otherwise it will end badly for us.”

Juve haven’t played in Serie B since 2006/07, when they had a league title stripped and awarded to Inter due to the Calciopoli scandal, being relegated as punishment.

Juve are 11 points clear of the relegation zone and are planning to appeal their sanction in an attempt to regain those points in the race for Champions League football. However, there are also further punishments in the offing as an investigation takes place into wages paid separately from the official statements during the pandemic.

The chaos at Juve resulted in the likes of Andrea Agnelli and Pavel Nedved losing their roles on the board while Allegri has been left with an ageing squad.
