A photo of an 11-year-old Emma Raducanu from the 2014 Braga Open has resurfaced.

In 2014, an 11-year-old Raducanu was competing in an under-12 junior tournament in Braga.

In the final, Raducanu defeated France’s Giulia Morlet for the title. In 2021, tennis social media freelancer Bastien Fachen found a video of Raducanu being interviewed at the 2014 Braga junior tournament.

Nine years later, Raducanu is a Grand Slam champion and one of the most popular players in the game.

Raducanu quickly became one of the most popular tennis players

Raducanu hasn’t won any titles since her stunning 2021 US Open triumph but still she is one of the most popular players on the WTA Tour. Raducanu is especially popular among the younger generation and there have been reports indicating that the interest in tennis in Great Britain has grown after the Briton’s US Open triumph.

Meanwhile, Raducanu last competed at the Australian Open, where she defeated Tamara Korpatsch before losing to Cori Gauff in the second round. Raducanu, who sustained an ankle injury 10 days before the Australian Open, said just competing at Melbourne Park was a success for her.

“I would say all the chips were against us and the chances of me playing this tournament were very, very low. I think 13 days ago, if you would have told us, ‘Hey, you’re going to be in the draw and win a round’, it would have been a massive effort for sure.

Saying that, I still think I didn’t necessarily play my best today. I felt like I could have done better. I just have to review the body right now. I’ve had some niggles in the past few months, and I just need to get that sorted, train, and then we’ll see after that.

I’m really buying into and trusting the work that I’m doing with [new coach] Sebastian (Sachs) and the rest of the team. So I’m feeling good and confident that, in six months’ time, I know it’s not going to be the finished product, but hopefully I would have made strides,” Raducanu said after her Australian Open exit.
