Why Dolphins’ Jeff Wilson, Jaguars’ Blake Hance are getting paid with each 49ers playoff win

The Dolphins and Jaguars may have been knocked out the playoffs, but Miami running back Jeff Wilson and Jacksonville offensive tackle Blake Hance still have plenty to smile about.

That’s because both have earned tidy bonuses as the postseason has gone on, even after their teams fell to the Bills and Chiefs, respectively.

Why is that? Well, Wilson and Hance didn’t start the season with their current teams, but rather with the 49ers, the team they signed with in the offseason.

Those deals feature incentives that reward them for the team’s success. And while they don’t play for San Francisco anymore, they’re still able to reap the rewards of the Niners’ run to the NFC title game, and potentially beyond.

According to CBS Sports’ Joel Corry, Wilson and Hance received $69,000 for the 49ers making the NFC championship game. That’s the same amount Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel will bring in. If San Francisco were to advance to the Super Bowl, they would be on track for another nice pay bump: $157,000 for a win or $87,000 for a loss.

That has to be music to Wilson and Hance’s ears.

Why are Jeff Wilson and Blake Hance receiving bonuses for 49ers playoff wins?

The reason they are reeling in these bonuses and someone like Marlon Mack, who also started the year with the Niners, isn’t, is because Wilson and Hance played in at least eight games for the team. By reaching the eight-game plateau, Wilson and Hance are entitled to receive the full amount of money offered by the league for advancing in the playoffs. That makes their bonuses worth the same as every player on San Francisco’s current roster.

Mack took part in just one game in 49ers red, so he can’t claim the same benefits as Wilson and Hance.

Wilson spent the first 4 1/2 years of his NFL career with the Niners before being traded to Miami on Nov. 1. Hance was claimed by San Francisco in August after being being waived by the Browns, and then featured heavily as a special teams blocker. Jacksonville claimed him off waivers on Oct. 31.

The pair likely have friends across San Francisco’s roster, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them rooting for their old team. The extra money doesn’t hurt, though.
