Jurgen Klopp returns to familiar transfer target as Liverpool struggles increase

Fulham are believed to be leading the race to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge – despite still attracting interest from Liverpool.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has already signalled his desire to bolster his squad having insisted he is not “too loyal” to his players, with a pressing need to strengthen their midfield. However, the only addition to date this month has been the arrival of attacker Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.

Norway international Berge, who was the Blades’ record signing when he joined in January 2020, has been linked with a move to Anfield. He has impressed throughout his time at Bramall Lane and Chelsea failed with a loan move for the midfielder last summer.

Have Your Say! Would Berge have been a good signing for Liverpool? Tell us what you think here.

Berge was left out of United’s squad to face Wrexham in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday and it is believed that his exclusion was linked to the closing of the January transfer window on Tuesday. The midfielder has been influential this season as the Blades consolidate their top two position in the Championship.

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom said on Saturday when asked of Berge potentially leaving the club: “I think there’s been interest, and there always is.

“You start to hear it before windows and things like that, but there have been no bids. All I can do is stress the same things. With the position we’ve got ourselves in, I don’t want anyone to leave.”

Despite their success on the pitch this season, Sheffield United need an instant injection of cash and are currently 12 days into a transfer embargo for potential incomings after failing to pay an instalment on a previous transfer agreement.

Liverpool have been continually linked with a switch for Berge – and still retain an interest in the player – but it appears increasingly likely he will instead be on his way to Craven Cottage. Fulham – who are above the Reds in the Premier League standings – are said by The Athletic to be in the driving seat for the Norwegian.

Liverpool boss Klopp recently admitted things need to change at the Reds and has spoken of the need to revamp the squad. However with just two days remaining of the January transfer window, it does not appear that the club will be making any further additions this month.
