Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was arrested early Sunday on charges of public intoxication, according to a report from Dallas-based TV station WFAA.

WFAA, citing confirmation from Dallas police, reports Bennett was arrested at approximately 6 a.m. local time in Old East Dallas after officers responded to a report of a man banging on doors in the area. Police “determined he (Bennett) was intoxicated” and arrested.

WFAA’s report indicates Bennett was placed in a city detention center and released at roughly 11 a.m. local time. The police didn’t indicate whether Bennett, 25, was the man banging on doors.

Public intoxication is a Class C misdemeanor in the state of Texas, conviction for which is a fine of up to $500. Here is how the Texas penal code defines public intoxication: “A person commits an offense if the person appears in a public place while intoxicated to the degree that the person may endanger the person or another.”

It is unknown why Bennett, a Georgia native, was in Dallas at the time of the arrest.

Bennett is coming off consecutive seasons leading Georgia to the College Football Playoff championship, the latter of which saw the Bulldogs go an undefeated 15-0 after a historic 65-7 blowout of TCU in the national title game.

Following Georgia’s victory over Alabama in the 2022 CFP national title game, Stetson appeared hungover the following morning on an appearance on “Good Morning America.” His infamous postgame celebration were brought up again before and after the 2023 national championship game, with Georgia coach Kirby Smart joking about his quarterback’s celebration the previous year:

But when head coach Kirby Smart spoke after the game with his quarterback, Stetson Bennett, he may not even have been talking about football. Instead, the conversation might have involved whiskey.

“I have no idea,” Smart said at a postgame news conference. “Probably what he’s gonna do tonight, making sure he doesn’t get into any of that Pappy (Van WInkle).”

Georgia has yet to issue a statement regarding Bennett’s arrest.
