“Ryder, Sergio Garcia can play”

Sergio Garcia has not played a single DP World Tour tournament since leaving the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in September after one round. But he is selectable by Luke Donald for the Ryder Cup thanks to his victory at the Masters in 2017, revealed in Dubai Keith Pelley, the CEO of the European Tour.

Sergio Garcia hasn’t played on the DP World Tour for almost six months. He did not participate in October at the Mallorca Open, the last event organized in his native country that any candidate for the Ryder Cup must play.

But according to Keith Pelley, the CEO of the European Tour, present this week in Dubai, he remains selectable for the big meeting in Rome next September. The Ryder Cup points record holder has a major asset: his victory at Augusta National in 2017 made him an “Honorary Life Member” of the European circuit.

He would therefore be eligible for the Ryder Cup, even if he does not meet any of the other criteria.

Keith Pelley, statements

“Luke Donald can choose whoever he wants, as long as it is a member of the Tour, explained Keith Pelley to the press, in Dubai.

Even if Sergio has not played the four required tournaments, even if he does not have enough DP World Tour points or Ryder Cup points, he can still be chosen because he is an honorary member. » Sergio Garcia made Ryder Cup history.

He holds the all-time record for points scored (28.5) but there is no telling that captain Luke Donald is going to select him because he has the right to do so. He has previously said he was tempted to bring along a new generation of European players.

The captain of the European selection also indicated that he was impatiently awaiting the result of the hearings which will be held on February 6 in England concerning the request for the cancellation of their suspension of thirteen players.

Banned by the DP World Tour to participate in the first LIV Golf tournament, Ian Poulter and several other players had taken legal action on the eve of the Scottish Open last July. Chance or coincidence, Sergio Garcia has just withdrawn his complaint…
