Mike Zimmer joins Deion Sanders’ Colorado coaching staff in unknown role

Former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer has followed Deion Sanders to Colorado after being on his Jackson State staff, Sanders confirmed.

Zimmer, who was a defensive analyst last season at Jackson State, was announced by Sanders on Thee Pregame Show on YouTube Monday.

Sanders revealed the addition of Zimmer and longtime college head coach Willie Taggart in extremely laid-back fashion. Neither is listed on the university’s official website yet.

“Taggart’s coming, too, by the way,” Sanders said. “Coach Zimmer’s coming, too, by the way. So another two head coaches. One in the NFL as well as collegiate. But not only that. Forget the titles — they know this game and they know kids and they’ve been capable of making tremendous decisions with the kids and the young men in mind. So that’s what I adore the most. Understanding how to establish the relationships with these young men.”

Sanders has sung the praises of his Jackson State coaching staff in the past, so it isn’t surprising he’s bringing as many with him as he can. Perhaps more importantly, he’s retaining the team that helped him build an extremely strong program.

Colorado has had lean years in football, having not won a bowl game since 2004 and making just four bowl appearances since then.

Sanders is looking to return the program to its glory years of the 1990s, when it made multiple New Year’s Day bowl games and won a championship. He made it clear in the interview he doesn’t view Colorado as a rebuild. “We trying to go get it right now,” he said. “I mean right now. In all the capacities of what winning is.”

While it has a long ways to go, Sanders seems confident in the team he’s assembling. Zimmer’s role was not confirmed by Sanders in the interview.
