Everton can ditch DCL for Tim Weah

Everton could be finally set to sign a new striker, ending weeks of searching and potentially ousting Dominic Calvert-Lewin…

What’s the latest?

That’s according to French publication L’Equipe, who claim that the Toffees are seriously interested in Lille’s versatile forward Timothy Weah.

Drawing interest from other Premier League clubs along with Sevilla, the 22-year-old still boasts a £12k-per-week contract which is not set to expire until 2024.

Therefore, his reported value of €15m (£13m) makes for an attainable sum for a club with little to spend but plenty of improvement needed this month.

Ditch Calvert-Lewin?

Having fallen out of favour at his club, sidelined by the goalscoring exploits of Jonathan David, Weah has only featured nine times this season in the league (six as a substitite) and is yet to score in 2022/23.

It marks a disappointing return after last season’s haul of eight goal contributions showed promise, although he did prove at the World Cup why he is a player worth having.

Earning a 6.90 performance rating, in his four matches at the tournament the USA international averaged 1.5 key passes per game alongside a 100% dribble success rate, scoring once too (via Sofascore).

Although his profile is rather different from that of the aerially adept Calvert-Lewin, the 6 foot 1 striker still boasts a physicality which suggests that he could operate at the apex of Frank Lampard‘s team.

He could even be more likened to Richarlison, who is notably close friends with Brazilian superstar Neymar. Weah won the admiration of his former Paris-Saint Germain team-mate, who claimed: “From what I have seen of his talent he has everything to go and be one of the top attacking players in Europe.”

When compared with midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues, a position in which he has sometimes played, the USA international is seen as a standout candidate. He ranks in the top 4% for progressive passes received, and when he gets into dangerous areas, he features in the top 10% for non-penalty goals among players in that position over the past 12 months.

As such, former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel was once full of praise for the youngster, commending the “outstanding combination of endurance and speed” that he showed.

With the potential to offer a clinical nature seldom seen at Goodison Park in recent years, it is not a secret that Everton are crying out for goals to keep them afloat in the top flight. This season they have notched just 14 goals in 18 league games, and as such they sit in the relegation zone.

They have not been helped by the continued absence of Calvert-Lewin, who continues to prove an unreliable asset for his club due to his unenviable injury record.

It may seem harsh to say, but with just 25 league appearances and six goals over the last season-and-a half, he cannot be assumed as their go-to starting number nine anymore.

Weah may be raw, but he could certainly add goals judging by his exploits last season, and he would surely offer more of a threat than the stricken Calvert-Lewin or the disappointing Neal Maupay, who has just one goal in 15 appearances for the club since his move from Brighton last year.
