Ryan Garcia Signs Contract For Tune-up Against Mercito Gesta – Contracts Signed For January 28th Fight

By Sam Volz: Ryan Garcia and 35-year-old ring veteran Mercito Gesta have signed contracts for them to meet next month on January 28th in a tune-up fight for the 24-year-old KingRy at 140 to get him ready for his April 15th mega-money clash against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis on Showtime.

Understandably, Ryan is receiving a lot of criticism from boxing fans for his decision to face an old second-tier journeyman in 19-year professional Gesta, while Tank Davis is taking a risky fight against Hector Luis Garcia on January 7th.

With Tank fighting a credible opponent, Ryan should have opted to face at least a fringe contender, if not a top-10 guy at 140. No one would have room to criticize Ryan if he’d picked someone like Steve Spark or Subriel Matias as his tune-up

. The fact that Ryan is picking an old journeyman as his opponent suggests that he doesn’t want to take any chances of losing out on his money fight against Gervonta on April 15th.

Gesta’s career has been on a steep downward slope since 2012 when Miguel Vazquez schooled him. Lately, things have gone from bad to worse for Gesta, with him posting a record of 2-2-1 in his last five fights.

“Ryan Garcia and Mercito Gesta have signed contracts for a Jan. 28 fight in Phoenix,” says Mike Coppinger. “The 140-pound bout will serve as a tune-up for Garcia, who is slated to meet Gervonta Davis on April 15 in a Las Vegas super fight at a 136-pound.”

Ryan would be better off fighting the two guys that beat Gesta rather than him. Ideally, the Golden Boy-promoted Kingry should be fighting a contender if he’s serious about wanting to use his January 28th opponent as preparation to get him ready for Tank Davis.

Fighting the shot southpaw Gesta isn’t going to help Ryan get ready for Tank Davis or any other top-tier fighter.

The social media star Ryan Garcia (24-0, 19 KOs) is opting to fight a non-15 ranked contender for his tune-up, which is furthering the perception that his entire career has been around fighting fluff opposition to building up a phony record so that he can get a cash-up money bout against a star. In this case, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is the guy that Ryan will be cashing out against.

It would have been better if Ryan, 24, had fought one of these guys for his tune-up on January 28th to show the boxing world that he’s not just looking for a cash-up payday:

  • Subriel Matias
  • Sandor Martin
  • Gary Antuanne Russell
  • Arnold Barboza
  • Steve Spark
