Crawford’s Trainer Didn’t Know Who Avanesyan Was

By Jake Tiernan: Terence Crawford’s trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre confessed on Wednesday that he had no idea who his opponent David Avanesyan was until after he’d signed to fight him in the main event on BLK Prime PPV this Saturday.

Like many other fans, BoMac wasn’t familiar with the #6 ranked WBO contender Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs), who was picked out for Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs). At the same time, arguably, a more deserving #2 Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis was ignored despite his desperation for a title shot.

Crawford choosing Avanesyan over Boots Ennis makes him look weak, and BoMac can’t change that, no matter what he says. It already looks bad that Crawford bailed on negotiations with Errol Spence Jr., But for him to choose Avanesyan over Boots Ennis, it looks like more cherry picking from the Nebraska native.

Like the previous six opponents that Crawford has faced since moving up to the 147-lb division in 2018, this is gimme.

Crawford takes pride in the fact that he’s knocked out all six of his opponents since moving up to the welterweight division four years ago, but what he conveniently leaves out is that he’s fought marginal opposition.

“It’s been a year since he fought, and people are probably doubting him,” said BoMac to Fight Hub TV about Terence Crawford wanting to show fans what a bad a** he is on Saturday night.

With Crawford having been out of the ring for over a year, we don’t know what we’re going to get from him. He didn’t look good against Shawn Porter, and being out of the ring likely won’t be the fountain of youth for the 35-year-old Crawford.

“The Spence fight didn’t materialize, so there are naysayers who have something to say. Avanesyan is tough. He’s in the top 10 in the welterweights. He’s got great countering ability.

“At first, I was, ‘Who is that?’ But after watching him, he’s pretty good. He can be tricky in there too. You got to do little small things to get him to commit to breaking that counter-punching own, which I know Terence is going to do.

“I’m expecting Terence to be himself. Go out there, download the information for a round or two and take it from there and dominate him. He’ll probably get him out of there. It’s definitely not an easy fight.

“I got my fingers crossed like everybody else,” said BoMac when asked if he believes that the Spence Jr vs. Crawford fight will happen next year,” said BoMac.
