Crawford Vs. Avanesyan: Will It Do 10,000 Buys?

By Adam Baskin: Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford’s fight against David Avanesyan this Saturday night on BLK Prime PPV has minimal buzz going on from boxing fans, and it’s possible that it could turn out to be a disaster in terms of the buy rate.

Today, there was seemingly nobody talking about Crawford vs. Avanesyan on social media despite the fight taking place this Saturday night, December 10th.

Perhaps the fans will suddenly begin talking up a storm about WBO welterweight champion Crawford’s fight with the 34-year-old Avanesyan beginning on Tuesday and continue right up to the fight.

That might not be realistic because few fans have been talking about the fight in the last two weeks. Crawford’s focus on discussing the Errol Spence fight rather than his match with Avanesyan has further hurt the promotion.

Promoter Eddie Hearn predicts that Crawford-Avanesyan won’t even bring in 10,000 buys. If true, Crawford can permanently forget about fighting any of the big names at 147 or 154.

Although ranked high on the pound-for-pound lists, Crawford is living proof that the average boxing fan doesn’t pay attention to that junk. That’s strictly for the ultra-hardcore fans to keep track of the pound-for-pound stuff. Fans are more interested in fighters that entertain and/or have great personalities.

You can argue that Crawford is lacking in both of those areas. He’s a southpaw counterpuncher who is better when he’s reacting to opponents rather than when he’s taking the lead.

For Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs), it’s crucial that his fight with Avanesyan bring in a respectable number of buys because he’s still hoping to face IBF, WBA & WBC welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr next year.

Unfortunately, that’s probably not going to happen if Crawford’s fight with Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs) brings in a low number of PPV buys, because it’ll put the Omaha, Nebraska native in a weakened position where he won’t be able to negotiate the deal that he wants.

Crawford-Avaneysan will be taking place at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

“It won’t do 10,000 buys,” Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said to the media last Saturday night about Crawford’s fight with Avanesyan. “10,000! If it’s $60, it won’t do 10,000 buys.

“If you’re getting paid that much [ten million+ dollars] to fight Avanesyan, you want twenty [million dollars] to fight Spence, or you want twenty-five [million]. It’s just madness.”
