Angelique Kerber as Serena Williams, and how moms can win again

Angelique Kerber is planning her comeback. The German tennis player, with Polish citizenship, won her fourteenth career title this season in Strasbourg, but her run towards other sporting successes was interrupted shortly before the start of the US Open: the Grand Slam champion, in fact, was forced to announce retirement due to her first pregnancy.

Angie is the new super mom of the Women’s Tour, following in the footsteps of Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka. A come back that underlines how you can still be competitive after motherhood. It is no coincidence that Serena reached four Grand Slam finals after giving birth to Olympia.

Kerber, winner of 3 Grand Slams, can still score big on the WTA Tour. Proving if she still needs to, like female athlete moms, they can compete like their peers. The winner of three Grand Slam titles is already planning her return, which will only happen under specific conditions.

Kerber told to WTA: “I don’t know what time or what tournament because I really want to take the time. And when I come back, I want to get back to 100 percent, get fit and feel good. That’s the plan.” The German tennis player also spoke of the small steps she is taking in this direction and the first ‘training’ she is carrying out: “I play with small children.

Not that intense, but they’re there. This makes me really happy also because I miss the tennis life. I am looking forward to the new life and what the next year will bring.” On the best advice she was given, however, she reveals: “Take your time.

Enjoy the moment now. Besides, they said I’ll hear when it’s time to come back. It’s better to take it a month after than a month before.” Also in the interview with WTA, Kerber spoke of other tennis players who have returned to winning after becoming mothers, such as Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Kim Clijsters: the first two with Grand Slam finals; the last with the victory of three Grand Slam titles.

“When you talk to them now, be more careful to listen to what they say. It is clear that mothers can come back, even winning important titles. And I hope I can be one of them too, which is an inspiration for young mothers and women returning to their jobs!”
