World Cup Group G table, standings 2022: Updated results and fixtures for Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon

Brazil were the pre-tournament favorite to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and they’re marching forward with a perfect record so far.

The Selecao claimed a Round of 16 berth with a 1-0 win over Switzerland on Monday days after overrunning Serbia 2-0 in their opener behind two Richarlison goals. An ankle injury to Neymar has put a damper on their strong start, but they won their second match without him.

Next up they’ll look to lock up the top spot by getting at least a draw against Cameroon in the final group matchday.

The other berth to the Round of 16 from Group G will be down to Cameroon, Switzerland or Serbia.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon would need to beat Brazil to have a chance at qualifying and few are expecting that.

Barring any surprise results by Cameroon, the winner of the other group finale between the two European teams — Serbia and Switzerland — will determine the second team to advance from Group G to the knockouts alongside favorites Brazil. A draw would send the Swiss through (as long as Cameroon doesn’t pull off the upset).

Do third place teams advance at World Cup 2022?

The format of the 2022 FIFA World Cup calls for only the top two teams in each group to advance to the knockout rounds. Third-place teams are therefore automatically eliminated.

The first-place team in every group will face a second-place team in the Round of 16.

The knockout round bracket is pre-determined with each of the slots filled by the top two finishers in each of the groups.
