Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios will be competing at the Mallorca Championships in 2023, tournament director Toni Nadal has announced.

Kyrgios, 27, is set to make his second appearance on the grass courts of Mallorca. This year, Kyrgios debuted at the Mallorca Championships. After starting his grass season with back-to-back semifinal appearances in Stuttgart and Halle, Kyrgios was the top favorite to win it all in Mallorca.

In his tournament opener, Kyrgios recovered from a break down to beat Laslo Djere. On the day of his round-of-16 match versus Roberto Bautista Agut, Kyrgios announced he was withdrawing from the tournament due to an abdominal injury.

“I’m really sorry I’m going to have to withdraw from tonight’s match here in Mallorca. I have been playing a lot of great matches lately and unfortunately I woke up with a pain in my abs. I went to see the tournament doctor right away and he advised that I don’t play tonight.

I really value the Mallorca Championships but I will follow his advice as I don’t want to risk Wimbledon next week,” Kyrgios said in a statement.

Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon final after Mallorca

Kyrgios pulled out of his Mallorca match versus Bautista Agut because he didn’t want to risk aggravating his abdominal injury ahead of Wimbledon.

At The All England Club, Kyrgios enjoyed his best Grand Slam singles run as he reached the final before falling short to Novak Djokovic in four sets. Kyrgios, ranked at No 22 in the world, has spoken several times about his love for grass courts as the Australian has made it clear multiple times that he feels he is one of the best grass players in the world.

In 2023, Kyrgios will certainly be extremely motivated to make big things during the grass season. It remains to be seen if Kyrgios can win his first Mallorca title next year.
