World No 11 Holger Rune has underlined that his next big goal is to win a Grand Slam. During this year’s indoor season, Rune made four consecutive finals – Sofia, Stockholm, Basel and Paris. This year, Rune captured his first three ATP titles in Munich, Stockholm and Paris.

His biggest title came in Paris, where he stunned Novak Djokovic in the final for his first Masters title. Going into the 2023 season, Rune has a clear goal in his mind that he wants to accomplish. “I know what I want.

I want to win Slams. I won an ATP 250, reached an ATP 500 final and won a Masters 1000. It is time for a Slam win,” Rune told Relevant Tennis.

Rune impressed Djokovic

In the Paris Masters final, Djokovic was gunning for his seventh title at Bercy, while Rune was playing his first Masters final.

Even though everything seemed to be on Djokovic’s side going into the match, it was Rune who claimed a 3-6 6-3 7-5 win. Serving for the match at 6-5 in the third set, Rune saved his six match points before finally realizing his second match point.

After the final, Djokovic admitted he was impressed by Rune’s fighting spirit. “What impresses me the most about Holger is his fighting spirit. He stayed composed mentally until the last shot. Showing this composure and maturity in a big match like this at his age is very impressive.

Holger defeated five top-10 players, and this is a week of his life. I had my chances in every set, but he came as a deserved winner. I did not use a 40-0 lead at the start of the second set, and those were the moments where the match went one way or another.

I would have had a nice chance of beating him had I grabbed a break, but he managed to turn it around. The crowd got on his side and lifted him up. Holger was brave and went for his shots. I was not active enough with my feet, with uncharacteristic mistakes in the crucial moments,” Djokovic said of Rune.
