By winning this year’s Davis Cup title, Canada became the 16th nation in tennis history with a title in the competition.

Raonic, who missed the entire 2022 season, was thrilled for his fellow compatriots. “Congratulation to Team Canada. Congrats to Felix, Denis, Vasek, Alexis and Gabriel on winning the Davis Cup. Many Canadians have achieved a lot in tennis.

This shows the strength of Canadian tennis at at an international team stage, winning the highest achievement. This is the greatest moment in Canadian tennis and I hope we get to see it happen many more times!” Raonic wrote on Twitter.

In the opening match of the final, Denis Shapovalov defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2 6-4.

Then, Felix Auger-Aliassime saw off Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4 to seal the victory for Canada in the final. “The emotions are tough to describe. Denis and I grew up together, dreaming of these types of stage, dreaming of winning the Davis Cup.

It’s a great moment for myself and for the country,” Auger-Aliassime said. Shapovalov, who is 23 but made his Davis Cup debut in 2016, grew up watching Raonic and company represent Canada in the competition. “From when we were juniors, watching Vasek [Pospisil], Milos Raonic and Daniel Nestor play Davis Cup, we wanted to do the same, and maybe even to win it one day.

It was tough to lose in 2019, it was an empty feeling and we wanted it badly this time,” Shapovalov said. Last week in Malaga, Canada first defeated Germany in the quarterfinal. Then, Canada edged out Italy 2-1 in a very tight tie to progress into the final. After beating Germany and Italy, Canada beat Australia to write tennis history.
