Fabio Fognini couldn’t hide his happiness and excitement after he and Simone Bolelli clinched the key win for Italy to upset the United States. Italy, who are without Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, entered the United States tie as the underdogs.

But they refused to go down without a big fight and it paid off as Fognini and Bolelli defeated Tommy Paul and Jack Sock 6-4 6-4 in the decisive match in the tie. Earlier in the tie, Lorenzo Sonego defeated Frances Tiafoe before Taylor Fritz defeated Lorenzo Musetti to clinch a decisive match.

“I am really happy, I am here with my ‘brother’ and we played really well,” Fognini said, as quoted on the Davis Cup Finals website. Bolelli added: “I am happy for me, for Fabio, for the team. It was really tough, but it is great to be through to the semi-finals”.

Fognini, 35, and 37-year-old Bolelli can play extremely well when they are sharing the same side of the net. In 2015, Fognini and Bolelli won the Australian Open men’s doubles title.

This Thursday, they turned back the clock and delivered a vintage performance. After Italy defeated the United States, Italian team captain Filippo Volandri had nothing but only words of praise for his guys. “I’m really proud of my team, and of this crowd.

It’s like we are in Italy! All the players did an unbelievable job. Even Matteo [Berrettini], who couldn’t play because of injury is here, and Jannik [Sinner] supporting from home. I am really lucky to have this team.

Everyone is ready to do the job whenever I call them, and I’m really proud of all of them. Sonego has had a tough year but I knew he could do unbelievable things in the Davis Cup and he did,” Volandri said. Italy will now face either Germany or Canada in the semifinal.
