Novak Djokovic was thrilled with his play versus Andrey Rublev as he described it as one of his best performances of the year. On Wednesday, Djokovic saw off Rublev 6-4 6-1 at the ATP Finals. Following his win over Rublev, Djokovic owns a 2-0 record in the Green Group and he has sealed a semifinal spot.
“I played very, very well. One of the best matches of the year without a doubt. He is a tough opponent. A great competitor. He possesses a lot of strengths in his game. I managed to find the right attitude and the right game.
In the 10th game of the first set, I think he was 40/30 and we played a long rally and I just stayed in there and told myself chances will come. He went down in his energy a little in the second [set] and I wanted to use the momentum and energy from my side in the first few games and it was a flawless second set,” Djokovic said, per the ATP Finals website.
How Djokovic defeated Rublev
Djokovic and Rublev got off to a great start to the match as both were delivering a high-level tennis early in the first set. In the ninth game, Djokovic saved a game point before he clinched the first break point of the match – which at the same time was the first set point.
Djokovic delivered a stunning backhand on his return and that’s how he won the first set. After winning the first set, Djokovic kept his high-level tennis as he broke Rublev for an early 3-0 lead in the second set. Djokovic then earned his third break of the match in the sixth game for a 5-1 lead before routinely serving out for the match in the following game.
In his Round Robin finale, Djokovic will play against Daniil Medvedev, who later tonight plays against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Meanwhile, Djokovic has now gotten closer toward achieving his goal of tying Roger Federer’s all-time record of six ATP Finals titles.
