Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has announced that he has reached a settlement with the fan who sued him after the Wimbledon final. During the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios complained to the chair umpire that one specific fan was distracting him.
“The one with the dress, the one who looks like she’s had about 700 drinks, bro!” Kyrgios was heard telling the umpire during the Wimbledon final. The fan, who was later identified as Anna Palus, sued Kyrgios for “a reckless and entirely baseless allegation.”
Now, Kyrgios admits he was wrong in making those comments and he donated 20,000 pounds to a charity chosen by Palus. “I told the umpire that a fan, who I now know to be Anna Palus, was distracting me during the match, believing that she was drunk.
I accept that belief was mistaken, and I apologise. To make amends, I have donated 20,000 pounds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, a charity chosen by Ms Palus. I will not be commenting on this matter again,” Kyrgios said in a statement.
Kyrgios fell just short of winning Wimbledon
Kyrgios, 27, enjoyed a great Wimbledon and ended up making his first Grand Slam singles final at The Championships. In the Wimbledon final, Kyrgios took on Djokovic, who recovered from a set down to beat the Australian for his seventh Wimbledon title.
Even though Kyrgios lost, many praised his level in the final and many stated that Kyrgios would have on that day if he played anyone else other than Djokovic. Recently, Kyrgios made it clear that he wants Djokovic to be allowed to compete at the Australian Open in January.
“We want to see the best players in the world there. Me being a competitor, I want to see Novak there. He’s some of the reason why I play. As a kid, you want to play the best players in the world in the best stadiums. Hopefully, he is there,” Kyrgios said.
